April 19th, 1999 Neurotic Outsiders Viper Room, Hollywood length: about 1:00 The Neurotic Outsiders are: Steve Jones, Duff McKagan (guitar, vocals); Johnny Taylor (bass, vocals); Matt Sorum (drums, vocals). here is the setlist (incomplete) Nasty Ho Always Wrong Black Leather Good News Better Way Feelings Are Good Story Of My Life New Rose Revolution Jerk Janie Jones Six Feet Under Sex Pistols song, another punk cover song, and a few Cult songs, including Wild Child. This show was an interesting experience for sure!! We had to wait in line for over 4 hours.. and the guest list was about 400 people, much more than the capacity of the place! It was a miracle that I got in, because they only let in about 15 people, and the rest were from the list. The first time I went to see them, I couldn't even get in. They didn't allow any cameras in there either! I probably won't go to the Viper Room again if there is a huge crowd like that night! Before the show started, I saw Duff come in, and he signed a couple of autographs, he was nice to everyone and made some funny comments to someone who he was supposed to know. Matt also stopped to talk a bit, and I also saw Steven and Johnny go inside, and there was a big commotion when they got in because everyone wanted to get pictures. When I got in they had already started.. the place was packed! It didn't look that much different from before the renovation, but it was pretty cool since eventually we got up closer to the stage. They had a lot of energy, especially Matt Sorum. His drums were solid, and you could feel the bass go through you! Both Duff and Johnny were having a great time. Duff was wearing a normal shirt and leather pants, and he had his hair dyed red. Matt came in with a pinstrip suit, but while he was playing he wore a black cowboy hat and a tank top. Steve and Duff both played Gibson LP Customs, except Duff's was black and Steve's was yellow, and they were quite loud! Johnny played a gibson bass, and it had a shiny, sparkling top. Matt had a Pork Pie drum kit, and he also did some background vocals. Duff had one nice guitar solo, he played pretty well, especially since he plays bass most of the time. Steve is pretty good too, he has a unique style that fits in with his songs. Johnny didn't have any bass solos, but he played quite well, and looked comfortable singing at the same time. The whole gig had a nice feel to it, as if they were just a normal band who played around clubs in Hollywood quite often. Their songs were much better live than on the album, now I see why many people like them so much over the other solo albums. I liked Good News, Feelings are Good, Six Feet Under, New Rose, Black Leather the best, but my favorite was Story of My Life, since there was a lot of emotion behind it. The sound system was pretty good, and I could hear most of the instruments distinctly. Also, when Duff sang a few of the songs, you could hear him pretty well; his voice is perfect for NO. When Billy Duffy and Ian Astbury from the Cult came up to do some songs, the show got really crazy because that's how he is. It was really great.. Billy is a great guitar player. Ian even dove off the stage into the crowd and came back up to finish the song. Their songs rocked too, I liked them even though I wasn't too familiar with the Cult. At the end they said that they would be back next week, and the manager thanked us for coming out. I think it could have been a little longer, but it was a great show nevertheless, except for the endless waiting. If you are going to see them at the Viper Room, be advised that most likely you won't be able to get in since its such a small place! After this, I hope they play some more, and maybe tour around the country, and possibly record another album because the work really well together! Ravi http://www.seas.ucla.edu/~ravi
